Heusgen Slams Trump Over Planned US Troop Withdrawal From Germany

Christoph Heusgen, the former head of the Munich Security Conference, has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the announced withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. soldiers from Germany. While criticizing the move, Heusgen also urged for composure and patience.

Speaking to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Heusgen dismissed the withdrawal as the actions of an “egocentric person who cannot tolerate criticism”. He countered that the presence of U.S. troops in Germany serves crucial, self-interested American purposes. He pointed out that the U.S. Command for Europe and Africa is stationed there, Ramstein serves as an essential air base for the logistical support of American troops overseas, and the military hospital in Landstuhl is vital for the initial care of U.S. deployed forces. Consequently, Heusgen warned that a withdrawal would ultimately undermine American interests.

Furthermore, Heusgen highlighted a pattern of behavior, noting that Trump had previously threatened troop reductions during his first presidential term. Despite these threats, the overall number of U.S. soldiers deployed in Europe actually increased. For this reason, he advised a degree of calm, concluding, “We should not jump over every stick that Trump attempts to place in our way”.
