The blackout that struck Berlin in early January placed several people in acute danger of death. This information comes from the full operational protocol analyzed for the “104 Stunden Blackout” podcast by the “Tagesspiegel”.
According to the report, the fire department had to deploy in 40 cases because patients were reliant on oxygen equipment. In one-quarter of these emergency calls, the situation was so critical that a rapid emergency doctor (Notarzt) had to be alerted. Twelve of the incidents were classified under the urgency level “RD1NC” which represents the highest level of severity-with two of these involving patients who were being mechanically ventilated. In the list of 416 total incidents recorded during the power outage, three instances of full resuscitation efforts were also documented.
The power supply in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf area failed for a total of 104 hours following a suspected arson attack motivated by far-left extremism. Up to 100,000 residents were affected by the outage, remaining in the cold and dark for a period of up to five days.
