Addressing rising global instability, Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) passionately defended the importance of diplomacy. During a visit to Rabat, Morocco, during his appearance on the RTL show “Nachtjournal Spezial” the minister stated that diplomacy is the only thing capable of salvaging situations. He pointed to major global flashpoints, such as the war in Ukraine and the escalating conflict with Iran, noting that discussions surrounding these issues consistently focus on diplomatic solutions. Furthermore, he cited crises like the one in Sudan, which demonstrated that military force alone cannot resolve conflicts. Wadephul emphasized that success relies only on open discussions, mutual agreements, and fostering understanding among parties. He acknowledged that this diplomatic process is often arduous, comparing it to the struggle of rolling a boulder uphill, like Sisyphus. Beyond these geopolitical concerns, Wadephul shared a personal reflection on his first year in office. He described the tenure as both challenging and fulfilling. While more demanding than he had anticipated, he found it also deeply exciting. Throughout the year, the CDU politician spent time visiting roughly sixty countries and meeting over one hundred twenty colleagues.
