Union Rejects Price Freeze on Deutschlandticket Citing Fuel Price Stability

The Union has rejected the demands made by the state transport ministers to temporarily freeze the price of the Deutschlandticket at €63 amid the ongoing energy crisis.

According to Stephan Stracke of the CSU, perpetual state prices are not an option for fuels like petrol and diesel. He noted that many residents, particularly those living in rural areas, depend heavily on private cars. For these individuals, switching entirely to public transport-a viable option for city dwellers-is simply not possible for commuting to work or taking children to school and kindergartens. Therefore, Stracke stated that providing immediate relief to drivers suffering from high fuel costs is appropriate. Furthermore, the party expert cautioned against setting a fixed ticket price for the Deutschlandticket beyond 2026, arguing that further developments in the Middle East must first be monitored.

Previously, Oliver Krischer, the Transport Minister for NRW (Green Party), had argued against raising the ticket price for local public transport in the coming year. Krischer contended that public transportation systems should not suffer if billions are being mobilized for fuel discounts and reductions in air travel taxes.
