US President Donald Trump stated on his platform, Truth Social, late Thursday night that the United States is currently reviewing the possibility of reducing its troop presence in Germany. He concluded his post by saying that a decision would be made soon and thanked his audience for their attention. Notably, the post was unusually brief compared to his typical updates, and no further details were provided.
This declaration is reportedly a continuation of remarks made earlier in the week. On Tuesday, Trump had sharply criticized the German political landscape and specifically targeted Friedrich Merz. Trump claimed that Merz wrongly asserts that it is acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons, adding that Merz was uninformed about the gravity of the situation. Trump emphasized that if Iran acquired nuclear capability, the entire world would be at risk, stating that he is currently taking steps regarding Iran that other nations or leaders should have acted upon long ago.
The former president further suggested that Germany was suffering greatly-both economically and otherwise-and that this was somewhat justified. This comes amid Merz, who had previously critiqued both the United States’ wartime policies and negotiation strategies as recently as Monday.
Historically, the US has maintained numerous military bases in Germany dating back to the Second World War. These bases are located across various German states, including Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia. For example, the Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate serves as one of the largest US Air Force installations outside the United States, supporting a “Kaiserslautern Military Community” where approximately 50,000 Americans reside.
