European States Keep Quiet On Power Grid Attacks

The federal states in Germany are handling information regarding attacks on their power infrastructure very differently. This discrepancy was highlighted by a research project conducted for the podcast “104 Stunden Blackout” by the newspaper “Der Tagesspiegel”. While states such as Hamburg, Bremen, and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) published detailed figures concerning acts of sabotage and disruptions in 2024 and 2025, Bavaria, Schleswig-Holstein, and Baden-Württemberg classified similar data as confidential.

Specifically, NRW reported a total of 375 politically motivated criminal acts targeting energy supply companies and facilities, noting that these attacks primarily originated from the left-wing political spectrum. Hamburg registered three such incidents, including one confirmed cyberattack on a power provider’s website, while Bremen documented two separate events.

Conversely, several other states, including Hesse, Thuringia, and Saxony, stated that they were unaware of any relevant incidents. However, specific cases were recorded in Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. These included instances such as an electrical pole cut by a reciprocating saw in Albig (Rheinhessen), and an attack near the Tesla factory in Grünheide, where a purported confession letter from the left-wing radical “Vulkan Group” was found.
