Kazak Suspect of Russian Espionage Arrested in Berlin

The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in Berlin announced on Wednesday that they had placed the Kazakh national, Sergej K., under arrest on suspicion of acting as an intelligence agent. The official investigation warrant had been issued on April 23rd by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice.

K. is alleged to have been in contact with a Russian intelligence service since May 2025. Specific accusations against him include transferring information regarding Germany’s military support for Ukraine and details pertaining to the German arms and defense industry. Companies developing drones and robots were reportedly among those particularly affected by this leakage of information. Furthermore, he is accused of transmitting photographs of public buildings in Berlin and military convoys on German autobahns, including images involving a NATO country.

In addition to these charges, K. allegedly identified and offered suitable sabotage targets within Germany to his contact within the intelligence service, and he was also supposed to recruit additional individuals for a sabotage and espionage group. He is scheduled to appear before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice again on Wednesday, who will make the final decision regarding the enforcement of his pre-trial detention.
