UAE Announces Exit From OPEC And OPEC Plus Starting May 2026

The United Arab Emirates has announced its intention to withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the expanded OPEC+ group, effective May 1, 2026. According to reports from state media, this decision is said to be in line with the country’s long-term strategic and economic vision, supporting the continued development of its energy sector. The stated objectives include accelerating investments in domestic energy production and enhancing the UAE’s role as a highly responsible and reliable producer. Furthermore, Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazroui explained that the timing of the withdrawal is crucial because global strategic reserves of crude oil products have reached a “disturbing level” requiring global attention. Following a comprehensive review of its production policies and both current and future capacities, the UAE asserted that this measure was necessary to safeguard national interests and ensure effective supply to the market.
