Twitter’s European headquarters in Brussels has closed its doors. All six of the team’s employees quit after an emailed ultimatum from new owner Elon Musk plans to cut 7,500 jobs.
The closure of the office, which has been an important point of reference for the political class of European institutions, as well as the course that Musk is following, have greatly worried the European Commission.
The American billionaire’s move comes a few days after EC Vice President Margareth Feshtager pointed out that the social network’s new operating model was flawed.
It also comes shortly after Brussels sent word to Mr Musk that the online messaging platform in Europe would operate under European Union laws.
“The bird is free,” Musk wrote after buying Twitter last month for $44 billion but, “in Europe the bird will fly according to our laws”, was the answer of the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
After the closure of the office in the Belgian capital, various companies have also expressed concern, which already doubt whether the social network is a safe place where they can advertise their products.
Also, another controversial move by the Twitter boss was the reactivation of former US President Donald Trump’s profile last week.
