When discussing the potential candidacy of Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU) for the office of Federal President, the AfD has spoken out against the CSU politician. “As the AfD, we are convinced that the Federal President must be a respected figure who stands above all parties and factions, and who is known throughout the entire nation. They must not be a politically partisan figure who uses the highest state office to continue practicing party politics” commented AfD Chairwoman Alice Weidel to “Bild” (Saturday edition).
Weidel further criticized Aigner, stating that in her capacity as President of the Bavarian State Parliament, Aigner has “more than once proven that she cannot step away from the role of a party politician, and that the interests of the governing CSU are more important to her than the rights of the opposition”.
From this, the AfD draws a clear conclusion. “For us, Ilse Aigner is therefore not electable as Federal President”.
