Many German companies have successfully integrated organizational support for women into their structures. According to a survey released by Bitkom, the IT industry association, approximately three-quarters (72%) of German businesses have designated a specific person or department responsible for promoting gender equality and increasing female representation.
Leadership accountability is high among these companies, with almost half (48%) assigning responsibility directly to the executive board or management. When looking at internal departments, 29% of companies place these topics within the HR or personnel department, while 20% rely on middle management. Furthermore, many companies employ specialized roles to oversee these initiatives. Over a quarter (26%) of firms have appointed dedicated Gender Equality Officers, and another 12% utilize a Diversity Officer.
The data was collected by Bitkom Research through interviews conducted with management, decision-makers, and HR professionals from 603 companies in Germany, all with 20 or more employees. The interviews spanned from the 50th calendar week of 2025 to the 6th calendar week of 2026.
