Bas Challenges Merz on Pensions Debate Cites Coalition Pledges

SPD leader and Federal Labour Minister Bärbel Bas criticized recent statements on pensions made by CDU politician Friedrich Merz, reminding him of the coalition’s agreements concerning the Chancellor. Telling the “Spiegel” Bas stated that a decent pension after a lifetime of work is an issue of rewarding contribution. She added that the federal government has initiated a reform commission, which is currently working under significant pressure to develop proposals to ensure the pension system remains stable, fair, and sustainable in the coming decades. The Minister explained that this reliable standard is the expectation for the country’s pension system. Bas emphasized adhering to a coalition agreement that requires waiting for the commission’s reform proposals before taking action, contrasting this with Merz’s earlier statement that the pension will no longer function merely as a “basic security”.
