Berlin Prosecutors Charge Syrian Man With Terrorism

The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday that charges have been filed against a 23-year-old Syrian national. The man is accused of planning a serious act of violence that endangers the state, financing terrorism, and disseminating propaganda for the “Islamic State”. According to the authorities, the individual allegedly planned an attack in Berlin, stemming from radical Islamist beliefs, aimed primarily at Jewish people and “non-believers” with the planning believed to have started no later than March 2025. Evidence suggests the suspect researched the construction of explosives and incendiary devices online, acquired a knife, as well as other potentially suitable items, and conducted experimental attempts. The prosecutors stated that his plan involved a knife attack followed by a suicide bombing using an explosive belt. The accused individual, who was granted subsidiary protection in September 2024-protection that was revoked in January 2026-has been in custody since his arrest on November 1, 2025. During searches, evidence was recovered. The charges were submitted to the State Protection Chamber of the Berlin District Court.
