Schwesig Demands Emergency Meeting With Chancellor Over Fuel Crisis Relief

The Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig (SPD), has reiterated the demand for a special conference involving the leaders of the German states and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). The goal of such a meeting would be to introduce further relief measures for citizens affected by the oil crisis.

Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”, Schwesig stated that it is urgently necessary for the Chancellor to convene a conference with the state government leaders. “We need a clear analysis of the economic consequences of the Iran crisis, along with reliable statements on what countermeasures the federal government intends to implement, both from the Chancellor and the Federal Minister of Economics” she said.

She noted the states’ agreement on a special session of the Bundesrat scheduled for Friday. According to the SPD politician, it is positive that they are coordinating to introduce initial relief measures for motorists. However, she stressed that the measures taken so far are insufficient. “We require further relief, for instance, for particularly burdened sectors such as the forwarding and transport industries” Schwesig demanded.
