SPD Demands National Stockpile List to Prevent Material Shortages

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is urging Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to establish an inventory list detailing the availability of essential raw materials and resources. According to Dirk Wiese, the SPD parliamentary group leader, the goal of this measure is to prevent shortages across Germany. Wiese stated that the worsening situation due to the conflict in Iran necessitates immediate and urgent crisis preparation within the Chancellery, suggesting action through either the National Security Council or the convening of an Energy Security Cabinet. He criticized the Ministry of Economic Affairs, claiming it has acted too slowly for weeks and must now clearly define where and how bottlenecks could rapidly emerge, noting that this issue extends far beyond just fuel shortages at gas stations. Wiese further emphasized that the crisis is already impacting various sectors, including the chemical industry, agriculture, the supply of aluminum, and overall value chains, which consequently affects food prices. The SPD politician insisted that all these areas must be considered to ensure preparedness and proactively address the developing situation.
