Schwesig Slams Planned Cuts to Skin Cancer Screening

Mecklenburg-Vorpommeran’s Minister-President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has sharply criticized Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) regarding planned restrictions on the coverage of skin cancer screening services. Speaking to “Bild am Sonntag” Schwesig stated that eliminating the skin cancer screening is “completely wrong”. She emphasized the critical role of early detection in the fight against cancer, asserting, “We must fight cancer. The figures for skin cancer are alarming. We must strengthen, not weaken, prevention”. Furthermore, Schwesig, who personally survived breast cancer, acknowledged the federal government’s planned healthcare reform and the need to manage rising health insurance contributions. However, she added that any reform must be both fair and sensible. The proposed legislation by Federal Health Minister Warken intends to limit the routine skin cancer screening, which is currently reimbursed to insured individuals aged 35 or older every two years, restricting it to high-risk groups in the future.
