The German Minister of Health, Nina Warken (CDU), intends to raise the contribution assessment ceiling within the statutory health insurance system. This plan comes from a draft legislative proposal on the “GKV Contribution Rate Stabilization Act” which was reported on by the “Gesundheit” newsletter from “Politico”.
The draft, dated April 16th, states that the monthly contribution assessment ceiling will also receive a one-time increase of approximately 300 euros starting in 2027. According to the document, this measure aims to strengthen contribution equity and generate a collective contribution from employers and individuals with higher incomes to support the reform package.
Currently, the contribution assessment ceiling stands at an annual total of 69,750 euros, or 5,812.50 euros per month. This change is projected to channel an additional 2.4 billion euros into the statutory health insurance, with the funds to be split equally between employers and insured persons.
However, this proposal may not be unanimously accepted within the governing coalition. On Wednesday, when questioned about a potential increase in the contribution assessment ceiling, Simone Borchardt, the health policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, stated, “We as the CDU/CSU flatly reject this”.
