Winkel Seeks CDU Youth Wing Leadership Renewal Despite Age Limit Hit

Even though he will cross the age threshold of 35 for membership in the Young Union this autumn, its national chairman, Johannes Winkel, apparently intends to remain in leadership for another two years. According to the “Tagesspiegel” which cites sources within the CDU and CSU youth organizations, Winkel will stand for re-election at the upcoming Germany Day event. This event is scheduled for “early October” just a few weeks before Winkel’s birthday. The Young Union’s statutes state that the membership of office holders remains valid until they step down, which would eventually occur in 2028 as scheduled. Winkel, who previously criticized pension policy and more recently the “relief package” from the coalition government led by Federal Minister Friedrich Merz, is already expected to secure a large majority. Representatives from the party’s youth wing told the “Tagesspiegel” that Winkel “has great support for his re-election within the Young Union and its committees, as well as the Young Group in the Bundestag and beyond” adding that “he is doing a super job”.
