SPD Leader Slams Health Insurance Plan Demanding Major Overhaul

Dirk Wiese, the first Parliamentary Director of the SPD parliamentary group, criticized the proposed reforms for the statutory health insurance system put forward by Federal Health Minister Nina Warken, demanding further adjustments. Speaking to the news portal Politico, Wiese stated that “they already have a slant that disadvantages the insured”. The SPD aims to present a “fair reform of the statutory health care financing” before the summer break. While recognizing that savings are necessary, Wiese stressed that these cuts should not solely burden the contributors. He suggested alternative approaches, pointing to potential savings in the pharmaceutical sector, specifically mentioning the manufacturer discount, which, in his view, “has not been addressed at all yet”. At the same time, Wiese acknowledged that savings are unavoidable, asserting that “the gap in the statutory health care finances…. can only be closed with savings”. Ultimately, the goal remains a “socially just and balanced reform”.
