The CDU parliamentary group leader, Jens Spahn, has advocated for a renewed public discussion regarding the return to nuclear power and the reactivation of recently shut-down reactors. Speaking at an innovation congress for the CDU parliamentary group on Wednesday evening, Spahn mentioned that some studies suggest the decommissioned reactors from recent years could be brought back online for an estimated cost of nine to ten billion euros. He emphasized the necessity of a societal debate on this topic, stating, “In any case, a discussion is worthwhile”. Spahn further compared the cost to building new nuclear power plants in other countries-which can require investments of 30, 40, or 50 billion euros-and noted that reactivating currently shut-down plants could be achieved with significantly less expenditure.
