Jens Spahn, the CDU faction leader, publicly backed federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche during a CDU/CSU faction meeting on Tuesday. According to participants quoted by the “Rheinische Post”, Spahn expressed gratitude to Reiche, praising her clarity on the matter. He noted that in the previous two or three weeks, there had been “personal attacks” coming from within the coalition partner’s ranks, particularly concerning energy policy. Spahn further stated his intention to emphasize internally who is trying to disrupt the energy policy from start to finish. After referencing market-based principles and pointing out that certain elements of the coalition partner were attacking the approach, he added that those elements could rely even more on their support. Specifically, Spahn said, “Thank you for your work. We must expand renewables in energy policy, but above all, we must keep it affordable, and you are doing that”.
