Johannes Winkel, the chairman of the Young Union, now views extended working lives as widely accepted. Speaking to the news portal Politico, Winkel stated that the concept has reached a point where “it is almost common sense”. He noted that just a year ago, a longer working life was considered “a big taboo” but the ensuing discussion has brought about change. Winkel added that the pension debate has “set things in motion” and now tangible results are expected. Looking ahead to the federal government, Winkel expressed his expectations for the autumn, stating, “I hope the Chancellor shares our view this autumn”. He emphasized that the significant disagreement seen last year must not happen again. Winkel attributed the urgency for action to demographic changes, asserting that “this is a reality that one must adapt to and make decisions about”.
