Klingbeil Pushes Energy Tax Cuts and Profit Levy through Bundestag

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil of the SPD anticipates that the Bundestag will quickly approve his legislative proposal for lowering energy taxes. He reiterated his push for introducing a so-called “super-profit tax”. Speaking to the “Bild” on Wednesday, he stated, “We have delivered immediately. My draft law to reduce the energy tax is ready and can now be discussed very quickly in the Bundestag. We are not leaving the people alone in this crisis. Now is the time for relief”. Klingbeil noted that those involved in “commuting, craftsmanship, freight forwarding, and everyone else struggling with high fuel prices” should benefit from the measures. Following the proposed energy tax reduction for fuels, Klingbeil announced additional steps against high petrol prices and, despite some concerns from the CDU/CSU, continued to advocate for the super-profit tax. The SPD leader declared, “We will strengthen cartel law and continue pushing for the super-profit tax” explaining his goal is for “excessive crisis profits to be seized” and returned to the citizens.
