In the latest poll by Forsa measuring voter favorability for RTL and ntv, the AfD has regained its position ahead of the Union. The AfD remains at 26 percent, while both the CDU and CSU have dropped by two percentage points, reaching their lowest score since the election at 24 percent. The Left Party has seen a slight increase, moving from 10 to 11 percent. Furthermore, the FDP is recovering ground for the first time in several months, currently polling at 4 percent. Poll figures for the Greens (15 percent) and the SPD (12 percent) remained unchanged. Regarding satisfaction, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) hit a new low this week; only 18 percent of respondents are currently satisfied with his work, while 80 percent are not. Significantly, a majority (52 percent) of CDU/CSU supporters are dissatisfied with Merz’s performance. After November 2025, this is the second time Forsa has openly questioned those dissatisfied with Merz’s work, asking them specific reasons for their discontent. The most frequent criticisms leveled against Merz are that he makes grand announcements without any concrete follow-up measures (23 percent), and that he has broken his election promises (22 percent). Other cited criticisms include a lack of clear policy direction (14 percent), insufficient leadership strength (13 percent), not understanding the problems of ordinary people (13 percent), and not thinking enough before speaking (11 percent). Supporters of the Union parties who are dissatisfied with Merz leading the government cited his “grand announcements without follow-through” (34 percent) and a “lack of leadership strength” (24 percent) as reasons for their discontent. The data on party preferences and chancellor satisfaction was collected between April 7th and 13th, 2026, with a basis of 2,502 respondents. For the specific measure of dissatisfaction with the chancellor, 801 eligible voters were questioned on April 10th and 13th.
