Coalition Slashing Fuel Tax Despite Potential Price Drops

The planned cut of 17 cents in gasoline prices by the coalition remains in effect even if tank prices drop unexpectedly before May 1st due to changes in the international situation. Steffen Bilger, the CDU’s parliamentary affairs director, told the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition) that this measure will proceed regardless of any unexpected rapid decline in prices. Bilger added that since consumers have struggled with the high costs at the pump for several weeks, the relief is also intended to offset the disadvantages of this recent period. The CDU politician confirmed, “The measure will definitely be implemented for two months”. Previously, the leaderships of the CDU, CSU, and SPD had agreed to reduce the taxes on diesel and gasoline by approximately 17 cents gross per liter for a period of two months in response to price surges following the Iran-Iraq War. The legislative process for this is scheduled to be initiated in the Bundestag this week.
