One Fifth Of German Users Check AI Content Sources Revealing Digital Risk

Only one-fifth of internet users in Germany check the source of content to identify AI-generated disinformation or fraudulent attempts, according to a cyber security monitor released on Tuesday by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Police Crime Prevention Program (ProPK). Although nearly half of those surveyed said they could recognize AI content, only 28 percent actively searched for inconsistencies in images.

The study, which surveyed 3,060 people in January, found that about a third of respondents have taken no measures to detect such content. Awareness of specific fraud scenarios is particularly low: only 38 percent believe it is possible for criminals to manipulate AI programs to disclose sensitive data. Claudia Plattner, President of the BSI, emphasized that recognizing AI-generated content is essential for identifying risks and disinformation.

Meanwhile, Stefanie Hinz, Chairwoman of ProPK, pointed to the frequently observed “cybertrading fraud” in which criminals use AI-generated videos of celebrities to promote alleged investment opportunities. She advised that such offers should be questioned critically.
