Greens Slam Government Energy Price Measures Demand Climate Dividend Instead

The Greens in the Bundestag argue that the government’s measures to combat high energy prices are misplaced and propose, instead, the introduction of a climate allowance paid out directly to citizens. According to Green political spokesperson Lisa Badum, this approach would be more comprehensive than the current package. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” she stated, “Their combination of a fuel discount and a 1,000-euro bonus is designed to reach only people who own cars or have employment contracts, for some reason”. She further claimed that the effectiveness of these measures depends on whether oil corporations and employers feel inclined to participate.

Conversely, the Greens argue that a direct disbursement mechanism, similar to those used during the current coalition administration, would allow for the straightforward relief of all people across Germany. A Green politician argued that a climate allowance is both pragmatic and environmentally friendly, adding that “the only thing against it are fossil lobby interests”.

The federal government has announced a temporary reduction of the energy tax on diesel and gasoline, amounting to approximately 17 cents per liter for two months. In addition, employers will be able to pay an “relief bonus” of up to 1,000 euros to employees, which will be exempt from taxes and levies.
