The VdK social association has issued sharp criticism regarding the government’s decisions aimed at alleviating high energy prices. During an interview with “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” VdK President Verena Bentele stated that the politics are once again betting that relief measures will somehow reach citizens through market mechanisms. However, she noted this is insufficient for many households that are already struggling to meet their basic expenses. Although the planned reduction in the mineral oil tax is being promoted as a form of relief, Bentele criticized it, asserting that it is, “in reality, not a targeted help for people with little money”. She argued that the main beneficiaries are companies, concluding, “And those who have to budget every euro end up being left behind”. Furthermore, the VdK President expressed disappointment with the tax-free premium for employees, stating that it falls short of a fair solution. She added that individuals on small pensions, many students, or low-income families will mostly not benefit, even though they are particularly affected by rising prices. Ultimately, the VdK believes that economic interests are being carefully considered while a precise, targeted support for low-income households is lacking. Therefore, Bentele concluded that the VdK calls for a change of course toward tailored measures that genuinely reach those who need relief the most.
