Germany Maintains Diplomatic Ties with Iran Says Foreign Office

According to the federal government, diplomatic relations between Germany and Iran remain intact. A spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office told the dpa news agency on Monday that Germany maintains diplomatic ties with Iran because it recognizes the country, pointing to the existence of an Iranian embassy in Germany. She noted that Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) had engaged in discussions with his Iranian counterpart on Thursday, describing the conversation as one that was “focused on the substance”. However, she added that no further such contact had taken place since then.

Earlier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had signaled a notable shift in diplomatic relations with Iran. On Thursday, he stated that, following an extended period of silence-which, he noted, was due to “serious reasons”-the federal government would resume talks with Tehran. These discussions would proceed “in coordination with the United States and European partners”. Merz explained that the objective was for Germany to contribute its own part to the success of the negotiations taking place between Iran and the US. These talks, however, had provisionally failed over the weekend in Pakistan.
