German Government Calls Hungarian Election Result Historically Significant

The German government responded with a sense of relief to the outcome of the parliamentary elections in Hungary. Speaking to the dts news agency on Monday, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated that the result was recognized not merely as an event but as historic. According to Kornelius, the Hungarian voters cast their votes in a manner unprecedented in history. He added, “They have not only voted out a government with an overwhelming majority; they have voted out a system, and after 1989, they have once again chosen freedom”.

Kornelius further noted that the election outcome is “good news for all of Europe”. He explained that the government welcomes this development because it makes it easier for German European policy, German objectives, and ambitions within the European Union to be advanced. Additionally, the Hungarians have demonstrated that there is no irreversible trend toward authoritarianism.

Regarding the new election winner, Péter Magyar, the government anticipates “a very constructive cooperation within the European Union” according to the spokesperson. He assured that the Hungarian government can count on Germany’s support in this matter and that they will now work together rapidly to advance mutual interests.

When addressing the release of frozen EU funds for Hungary, the spokesperson remained cautious. He stated, “There are procedures and there are conditions set by the European Commission for these funds, and we leave that process to the Commission”. Nevertheless, he confirmed that the goal remains the “greatest possible normalization” with the new government in Hungary.
