Debt Brake Reform Commission Reaches Deadlock No Agreement Reached

The members of the committee reviewing the debt brake reform have reportedly failed to reach an agreement. According to the newspaper “Bild” (Saturday edition), this information comes from sources within the committee. Consequently, no substantive outcomes are expected, and the committee members are now only holding meetings for appearance’s sake. Involved parties have supposedly been aware for the past two months that they could not achieve a result. The core problem cited is the widely divergent views regarding the debt brake and potential areas for relaxation. Nevertheless, further meetings will take place to prevent additional strain on the black-red coalition’s negotiations concerning structural reforms in tax policy, the budget, healthcare, and long-term care. Sources added that the committee no longer convenes in large plenary sessions but instead meets only in smaller groups. An absolute final meeting is scheduled for May, after which the committee is expected to present only a non-binding collection of ideas.
