IG Metall Demands Quick Energy Price Relief Before Finance Minister Meeting

Before meeting with business associations and trade unions to discuss the economic situation stemming from the war in Iran, IG-Metall Vice President Jürgen Kerner is demanding swift state relief measures. Speaking to the “Power & Policy” podcast from Politico, Kerner stated, “Klingbeil’s office needs to secure financing in the short term, in my view”. He added, “I believe people are expecting immediate relief regarding energy costs. This means we either have to increase the commuter allowance or provide an immediate payout”. Kerner emphasized that relief measures implemented only through the year’s tax return would be insufficient. “Arguing that it will show up eventually during the tax return next year isn’t enough for the people”. The union representative also stated that businesses would require “immediate relief measures”. Kerner will take part in the meeting this Friday, anticipating that the discussions with Klingbeil will be a process of gauging different viewpoints. He believes the session will involve him assessing what key social groups-including the unions and employer organizations, which he represents-support and what their specific demands are.
