Berlin Pergamon Museum Saal Reopens April 2027 After Year of Closure

A section of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin is scheduled to reopen on April 13, 2027, following years of closure. This reopening will include the carefully renovated hall housing the world-famous Pergamon Altar. However, according to “Der Spiegel” citing an internal construction timeline, this hall is set to close again in July 2034 for a period of five months.

The reason for these repeated closures is reportedly planned renovations in another part of the museum. Furthermore, other areas that have recently undergone restoration are expected to remain accessible only temporarily. For instance, the main entrance, featuring the newly constructed “Tempietto” is anticipated to serve as the entry point for just over three years starting in April 2027, after which it is planned to close for upwards of six years. The Schlütersaal is also slated to close again for more than five years beginning in 2032.

Regarding the section scheduled for partial reopening next April, its opening date is uncertain. Internally, it was reported at the end of September that the “time buffer has been completely used up” with officials stating, “Every disruption has a direct impact on the completion date”. However, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation informed reporters that they are still anticipating an opening in the “Spring of 2027”.

Under the initial plans, the entire museum is not due to reopen until July 16, 2037. This target date has already been postponed by three weeks; according to the documents, a major date had originally been set for June 24th. It is also noted that the renovation project, which was originally supposed to run from 2005 to 2010, did not actually begin until 2013.
