In the dispute over the military security of the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. President Donald Trump appears to be increasing pressure on Europe. According to the “Spiegel”, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte informed the capitals of Europe following his visit to the White House that Trump expects concrete commitments regarding the dispatch of warships or other military capabilities from Europe within the next few days, suggesting that mere political declarations of intent are no longer sufficient. Immediately after meeting with Rutte, Trump reiterated his criticism of NATO partners, stating on his social media platform, “Truth Social” that “NATO was not there when we needed it, and it will not be there when we need it again”. Furthermore, he again referred to the Greenland dispute, which has caused tensions within the military alliance in recent months.
