Scholz Honored With Prestigious Leo-Baeck Medal For Jewish Life Contributions

Former Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is expected to receive the Leo-Baeck Medal for his contributions to Jewish life in Germany. According to the “Tagesspiegel” (Thursday edition), he will receive the award from the Leo-Baeck Institute in New York on April 28th, with former US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken slated to present it. David Marwell, President of the Leo-Baeck Institute, stated to the newspaper that the medal honors Chancellor Scholz’s commitment to preserving the history and memory of German-speaking Jews, as well as his support for Jewish life in contemporary Germany. The institute has previously recognized numerous German officials for supporting its mission to preserve and promote the history and culture of German-speaking Jews. Recipients of past awards include former Chancellor Angela Merkel, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer. The Leo-Baeck Institute New York functions as a research library and archive dedicated to the history of German Jewry. It holds one of the most significant collections of primary sources and research materials documenting Jewish life in Central Europe during the centuries preceding the Holocaust. Much of the archive has been digitized and is accessible via its catalog.
