Considering the high prices of gasoline, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has expressed openness to raising the commuter allowance. Reports citing Chancellery sources indicate that raising the current commuter allowance of 38 cents to up to 45 cents per kilometer is being discussed. This financial relief would be implemented for citizens next year when they file their tax returns. Additionally, Merz stated his support for reducing the electricity tax for everyone. A decision on this might be reached as early as Sunday during a meeting of the coalition committee. However, the federal chancellor intends to maintain the recently introduced gasoline price rule, which limits gas stations to increasing their prices only once per day at noon since April 1st.
