The CDU politician and member of the CSU, Thomas Erndl, supports the potential involvement of Germany in a military mission in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to the partner newspapers of the “Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft” on Thursday, Erndl told them that as a member of parliament, they await early inclusion and support the government in any potential commitment. He added that it is now fundamentally the responsibility of the government, particularly the Federal Ministry of Defence, to examine and prepare concrete courses of action. According to Erndl, any possible measures must always be viewed within a multinational context. Therefore, close coordination with international partners, principally the United States, as well as relevant regional actors, is necessary. The goal is to take responsibility, enhance the security of trade routes, and simultaneously balance German interests with international obligations. Speaking on Wednesday morning, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had declared that Germany would contribute in suitable ways to ensuring free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, following an agreement on a ceasefire between the US and Iran. However, the government has not yet issued an official statement clarifying the precise scope of this commitment.
