Donald Trump stated on his platform “Truth Social” Tuesday evening (US East Coast time) that he is prepared for a ceasefire with Iran, and that a threatened major assault has apparently been postponed for now. According to the former US President, he would be willing to suspend bombings and attacks on Iran for two weeks, provided that the Islamic Republic agrees to the “full, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz”. He characterized this as a “bilateral ceasefire”. Trump also mentioned that Pakistan seemingly brokered the ceasefire, indicating he had conducted discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, the chief of the Pakistan Army. These individuals reportedly asked him to “hold back the destruction force planned for this evening against Iran”. Furthermore, Trump asserted that “all military objectives have already been achieved and exceeded”. Regarding negotiations for a final agreement on long-term peace with Iran and peace in the Middle East, he claimed that significant progress has been made. “We have received a ten-point proposal from Iran and are convinced that it offers a viable basis for negotiation” he added. Trump suggested that nearly all historical points of contention between the United States and Iran have been settled, and the two-week period would allow for the “finalization and implementation of the agreement”. He also claimed to be acting not only as the US President but “at the same time as a representative of Middle Eastern countries” concluding that this “long-standing problem” is now “close to a solution”.
