Political scientist Carlo Masala of the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich believes the German government must condemn the attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure announced by US President Donald Trump. For this specific incident, he anticipates a definitive break within NATO. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Wednesday edition), Masala stated that “attacks on civilian targets are ultimately war crimes”. He noted that while the US has committed such acts previously, “they have never announced these crimes”. Masala added that if such an event occurs, a German government adopting a cautious stance cannot simply maintain its current approach; instead, it would need to unequivocally and clearly condemn the actions, meaning, “we are heading toward the final break of NATO”.
