A good front-facing camera is becoming increasingly important to many smartphone users. According to a survey by the IT industry association Bitkom, more than two-thirds (69 percent) consider a good selfie camera one of the most important features when evaluating a device’s camera capabilities. This makes the selfie camera more highly rated than other camera features, such as natural-looking colors and contrast (65 percent), good low-light photography (61 percent), or a high megapixel count (61 percent).
In addition to selfie performance, many users want a smartphone capable of taking good photos of subjects from a distance. Sixty percent prioritize strong zoom capabilities, while 59 percent are concerned with high video resolution. Furthermore, over half (56 percent) find automatic photo enhancement features relevant. Wide-angle shots are also important to 55 percent of respondents.
Conversely, the sheer number of camera lenses is considered relatively unimportant, with only 48 percent paying attention to this detail. A smaller minority indicated that camera functions are not a concern at all: ten percent said the camera plays no role in choosing a smartphone, and three percent simply want to take good photos without knowing the technical functions.
The survey was conducted by Bitkom Research via telephone with 1,006 people in Germany aged 16 and over, including 861 individuals who use a smartphone privately. The data was collected during the first through fifth calendar weeks of 2026.
