The former Hungarian Foreign Minister and EU Commissioner, Peter Balazs, leveled serious accusations against Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, just before the April 12th election. Speaking to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Balazs stated that Viktor Orbán is “Putin’s most valuable agent in the West” adding that the Kremlin has no better person to represent Russian interests inside the EU and NATO.
According to the former minister, “Putin is willing to pay a high price to keep Orbán in his position as a Russian agent”. Balazs further claimed that Orbán is an adept player, “knowing exactly that he is only a good agent for Putin, Xi Jinping, and Donald Trump as long as he remains within the EU and NATO”.
Balazs noted that hopes for Orbán’s removal arose in Hungary back in 2018 and again in 2022. He commented that, “the dissatisfaction with the government has never been as great as it is today”. He added that the Hungarians are eagerly awaiting a savior, pointing to Peter Magyar’s entry onto the political stage.
However, Balazs does not anticipate that Hungary will rapidly become a strong supporter of Ukraine under Magyar, the current head of the Tisza party. He expects a gradual return to normalcy if Tisza wins the election. “Initially, there will be a very difficult transition, similar to Poland after the defeat of the right-wing populist PiS” Balazs explained. He cautioned that this transition in Hungary will be much harder because Orbán has successfully placed loyal supporters in all the most important institutions.
