NRW Interior Minister to Rehash Football Riots at Security Council Meeting

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister, Herbert Reul of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), commented on the disturbances during the soccer match between Dynamo Dresden and Hertha BSC over the Easter weekend, stating that he remains open to dialogue. Reul told the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday that if unrest can only be contained on the pitch by the police, it clearly indicates a line has been crossed. He added that the recent events in Dresden once again showed him that the clubs need to be held to higher standards. Despite this, he emphasized his continued commitment to dialogue with the DFL (German Football League), the DFB (German Football Association), and the clubs, and confirmed that he plans to raise the issue at the next Interior Ministers’ Conference. The federal states have the authority to charge clubs with additional costs incurred from police deployments at high-risk matches. Consequently, politicians are gradually increasing the pressure on the clubs. Furthermore, Saxony’s Interior Minister, Armin Schuster (CDU), has also announced his intention to address this topic at the next Interior Ministers’ Conference following the events of the weekend.
