In the opening match of the 28th Bundesliga matchday, Union Berlin and FC St. Pauli drew with a score of 1-1. The game started favorably for the visiting team, as Mathias Pereira opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a spectacular volley from 25 yards out. Although Union initially controlled the first half, they were unable to convert their chances. The Hamburg side displayed solid defense and capitalized on one of the limited opportunities to take the lead. The Berlin players pushed for an equalizer but were repeatedly thwarted by the standing Nikola Vasilj in the visiting goal.
However, Union Berlin equalized in the second half when Andrej Ilic scored from a corner kick by Derrick Köhn in the 52nd minute. Following the equalizer, the match became an open exchange where both teams had opportunities to win. St. Pauli faced pressure at times but managed to salvage a draw through a determined performance. This was further reinforced by the sending-off of Pauli captain Jackson Irvine in stoppage time after receiving a yellow-red card for a foul.
In the league standings, the Hamburg club remains in 16th place, while the Berlin team drops to tenth. St. Pauli will play Bayern on Saturday, while Union Berlin faces Heidenheim on the same day.
