The SC Freiburg suffered a 3-2 defeat to FC Bayern Munich during the 28th matchday of the Bundesliga. This loss came after the Freiburg had established a 2-0 lead, a lead that was held until just ten minutes before regular time ended. Freiburg put on a commendable performance, especially considering that nothing counted happened for them in the first half.
The Bayern Munich team, forced to play without strikers Harry Kane and Nicolas Jackson, struggled for much of the game against the well-organized Freiburg defense. Manuel Neuer, who recently celebrated his 40th birthday and joins a select group of Bundesliga players in this age bracket, also appeared to be slightly out of shape.
In the first half, Freiburg generated more promising attacks and piled pressure on Bayern. Philipp Treu missed a significant goal-scoring opportunity when he shot the ball just past the goal. Bayern found it difficult to penetrate the home side’s aggressive defense, and they rarely managed to create significant shooting chances on Noah Atubolu’s goal.
Freiburg started the second half strongly, scoring first when Manzambi struck from distance following a turnover by Bayern. Minutes later, Höler capitalized on a miscommunication in the Bayern defense to make it 2-0.
However, this set the stage for a dramatic late-game comeback by Bayern. A double goal from Bischof in the 81st and 92nd minutes initially leveled the score. Lennart Karl then netted the winning goal for the visitors in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Other results from Saturday afternoon included Hoffenheim losing to Mainz with a score of 1-2, Bremen losing to Leipzig 1-2, Leverkusen defeating Wolfsburg 6-3, Hamburg and Augsburg drawing 1-1, and Gladbach and Heidenheim sharing the points in a 2-2 draw.
