Greens Leader Dröge Slams Government Over Unsafe Syria Exit Talk

Katharina Dröge, the leader of the Green faction, strongly criticized public statements from the federal government regarding the potential departure of a large segment of Syrian refugees from Germany. Speaking to the Funke Media Group’s newspapers, she stated that Syria remains unsafe. She added that a large majority of Syrian nationals residing in Germany, numbering approximately 730,000 people, hold long-term residence permits. Dröge also pointed out that many Syrians are employed in crucial shortage professions, playing a vital role, for instance, in keeping the healthcare system operational. According to her, “Such statements create nothing but confusion and uncertainty”. She labeled this approach as poor policy. Regarding the 80 percent figure initially cited by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), the faction leader expressed doubt, stating, “I fear that the Chancellor simply plucked that number spontaneously. He can obviously not explain where it comes from. Furthermore, Merz’s statement has no bearing on the reality”.
