In light of sharply rising fuel prices, Green Party politician Ricarda Lang is calling for a statutory right to work from home, arguing that it would give employees much-needed relief. “Every drop of fuel saved is currently good for citizens’ wallets” she told the Funke Media Group journals in a recent interview.
Lang stresses that employees should have a right to mobile work and home‑office in any situation where the job permits it and no operational objections arise. With fuel and train fares climbing, she says home‑office can provide concrete relief for many workers.
However, she acknowledges that for certain professions working from home is simply not an option. “Those who must commute every day should not be left to bear the additional burdens alone” she added. To address this, Lang proposes targeted assistance financed through a super‑profits tax. Companies that generate extraordinary gains during the crisis would be required to contribute to offsetting the fallout for employees and society.
