First Wolf Attack on Human in Germany Since Reintroduction Occurs in Hamburg

According to authorities, Monday marked the first wolf attack on a human in Hamburg since the carnivore was reintroduced to Germany. The animal bit a woman in the face during the evening in a shopping street in Altona, officials said on Tuesday.

The wolf, which had been sighted in the western parts of Hamburg over the weekend, appears to have wandered into the shopping arcade. After biting the woman it briefly disappeared, but police later found it near Binnenalster. The animal was captured and taken to a wildlife park, where it will probably be released again later.

The injured woman was taken to a hospital and has since been discharged.
