Hardt Demands All Syrian Groups Be Included in Future Rebuilding Plans

Jürgen Hardt, the foreign‑policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, said he expects the German government to insist that every community in Syria be included in the country’s reconstruction during talks with the transitional president, Ahmed al‑Scharaa.

“Syrian society is multi‑ethnic with many different groups” Hardt told the RBB‑Inforadio on Monday. “There is essentially no majority group, so the only way forward politically is to ensure all of these groups are involved and their rights protected”.

He added that a key goal is for Syria to live peacefully with its neighbours. “With a stabilised, peace‑oriented Syria, we would have an important player and partner for overall regional stability” he said.

Al‑Scharaa is visiting Berlin on state business and will meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The agenda is expected to include discussions on the return of Syrian refugees from Germany to their homeland. Hardt noted that in most of Syria the civil war has ended, eliminating the original push factor behind the flight. Therefore refugees should be encouraged to come home, ideally with financial support given directly to individuals rather than through the government, so they can rebuild their lives.

Hardt stressed that the focus is on those who are not integrated in Germany, who lack jobs and prospects here. “We must help them find a path back to Syria once conditions are suitable, which will also be a theme of today’s discussions” he said. At the same time, he acknowledged that some Syrian refugees might remain in Germany if they are needed there.
