Kramp‑Karrenbauer Calls for a Female Bundespräsident in Germany

Annegret Kramp‑Karrenbauer, chairwoman of the Konrad‑Adenauer‑Stiftung and former chair of the CDU, made it plain that she supports the idea of a female president of Germany. Speaking to the ”Rheinische Post” in its Monday edition, she answered a question about whether the time had come: “Yes-without ifs or buts”.

She said she would not rule out running herself, but she left that question open. “That’s a matter for politics and the media: people have other concerns at the moment” the Saarland native explained. She added that her name coming up in the speculation is not unusual, “because the current chatter is about who fits the mold. Different names are being mentioned, mine included”.

The former Defence Minister noted that the debate has the usual political dynamics: what the majority looks like and who can achieve what. “The real question, however, is the state of our country, which kind of head it needs, and who meets that profile” she said. That content‑based discussion, she said, must take place as the election date draws nearer. Steinmeier’s second term ends in March 2027, with the presidential election scheduled for 30 January 2027.
