SPD Demands Union Establish Food Price Monitoring Office in Germany

The SPD is urging the Union to set up the price‑watching body that the coalition agreement called for, as food prices in Germany continue to rise.
Fraktionsvize Esra Limbacher told the “Rheinische Post” that “we need a price‑watching office that provides transparency in the formation of food prices”. He added that the coalition agreement had agreed on an independent, directive‑free institution and that it is time to make that happen. According to Limbacher, politics must better understand “where and how profits are made” to implement effective consumer‑protection measures.

While the Iran-war‑related cost jump has not yet translated into immediate supermarket price hikes, the SPD deputy says that German food prices have already climbed 30 % since 2020. He concludes that though trust matters, careful monitoring and preparedness remain essential.
